About Us
We were formed in 1992 as a self-help group by a team of severely disabled young people who were frustrated by the absence of low cost accessible transport to take them out and about at a time and to a destination of their choosing.
The group sought help from the Norwich Community and initially they borrowed a vehicle from the Norwich Volunteer Bureau. With the assistance of the Lions Club members in Taverham the charity was Registered as An Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community 27814R and Registered with the Inland Revenue as a Charity X0969/93 , a management committee was formed, volunteers sought and fundraising for the charity started.
Today we own five fully accessible mini-buses and have a membership of over 600 people who rely on us to help them access their daily living needs.
We remain volunteer dependant - there are over 30 regular volunteers - 24 are working as drivers and passenger assistants on the buses and 3 are in the office every week. We have two volunteers making our recycled greetings cards that we sell direct to our members and at our events. Our volunteer management committee has three serving representatives of the membership including Roger our appointed "membership trustee" who was one of the original founders of the charity. There is a small paid team of : 6 part time and job share drivers, and full time we have our Transport Co-ordinator and the Project Director.
Our History
The Taverham Lions helped the group form the charity in 1992 and their members served as officers on the first management committee and acted as charity trustees. We started life with goodwill and a borrowed bus from Norwich Volunteer Bureau, today the organisation is a respected provider of transport services in our community with:
- Our management committee/trustees includes three service users and two representatives of Norfolk County Council.
- Five fully accessible mini buses.
- An office base and hard standing for our buses courtesy of the Norwich Primary Care Trust at the Community Hospital on Bowthorpe Road. Norwich.
- Over 40 regular volunteers working with the Project Director, Our Members Co-ordinator, and 8 part-time drivers.
- There are 698 registered members of the service.
